Hello,

My 20HP Johnson motor hasn't run on the boat for a while and trying to get her back in shape, she would start but only run with choke partially closed.

Started to rebuild the Carb and found the hose from the intake manifold to the crankcase cover was cracked. FIxed this and put it back together and it ran better but still didn't idle well and would spit and /or backfire.

Read a couple forums and checked the thermostat and it looks like it hasn't worked for some time so ordering one of those too, planning on rebuilding the carb now and the kit comes with a new needle valve bearing.

My question is, how do you get the old needle valve bearing out of the carb?

I also have a question on whether I need to, or should, replace the orifice plug as part of the rebuild? I see there is a special tool for that in my service manual and they are available.

Any other suggestions on what I should take a look at are appreciated.

FYI - the points, condensors, the coil under the flywheel and one of the external ignition coils are also newly replaced.

Thanks in advance

No need to replace orifice plug unless somebody has damaged it, like by jamming wires or drills through it. You can clean it in place with carb cleaner.

Some people remove the bearing with a drywall screw. Myself, I made a hook tool.

I use a 4x41 thread tap to remove that nylon bearing. It attached to the nylon and NOT the carb casting.
