I have a 1993 counter rotating 225 with 300 hours. I blew the port middle cyl. do to a wrist pin failure. I heard that Johnson motors have a problem with #2 piston wrist pin. Which piston is the #2 piston? And if I purchase a remanufactured powerhead will I the same problem with that powerhead? What is the normal life expectation for this type of motor? Lastly, If Omc is having a problem with wrist pin failures is there any kind of a price break for repairs?

The port middle is #4. They really don't have a wrist pin problem as such. You may have a wrist pin failure due to lugging or overproping. The wrist pin damage may have been second. Is the top of the piston OK? What fuel are you using? What RPM will the motor achive with an average load? How old is the fuel? What spark plugs are you using?
Is the top ring still in tact? Is there any coking?
You will be OK with a reman unit from a good remanufacturer (Southwest, Flagship, Riverside) as long as you find out what caused the origional failure.

Dale

Re: Johnson 225 blown powerhead

Thanks Dhadley for the reply... I am using champion QL77Jc4 Plugs. This gas is 89 Octane and is not old. RPM is 5600 at WOT based on an average boat load. The piston and rings were destroyed and the piston pin was the only thing left. I am not sure what you mean by coking.... Do you have any info. (email, web address or phone #) on Riverside, flagship or southwest?

Re: Johnson 225 blown powerhead

Exactly how old is the fuel? The spark plugs are correct. I would recommend 87 octane fuel (as does OMC) and a little more RPM. 5800 to 6000 will reduce the load (strain) and lower combustion temps. Try rasing the engines before switching props. You are close and only looking for 2 to 4 hundred.
If the piston burned away from near the middle towards the exhaust port, thats detonation. The cause must be found or it will destroy the new p/h. Look at the fuel delivery system including the anti-siphon valve at the tank. Hose and fittings should be 3/8 I.D. and no 90 degree fittings. Check the flywheel center hub magnet (affects timing).
The powerheads on this web site are from good ones. Riverside and Flagship are under contract with OMC and theirs can be purchased from any local dealer.
Hope this helps. If you have other questions you can post them or e-mail me at mpcdh@aol.com. Good luck.
