Ok so I have a 1998 Johnson 225 that will not tilt up but will go down, when I hot wire the up relay at the relay plug the motor goes up like normal with no problem, leading me to believe that the relay is bad. I bought 2 new relays just in case and replaced both, now with 2 new relays in I still have the problem. I stuck the prob of my light tester in there and when I press up on the switch the light barely comes on, but I dont understand why, since the relay is brand new why it wouldnt be allowing the proper amount of power through... Any suggestions??

Re: Johnson 225 tilt trim

There is a tilt limit switch in the circuit. If you look carefully, you will see that there is a pair of blue/white stripe wires that run into the tilt trim area from the lower left cowling area. The wires plug via pigtail connectors very near the bottom of the electrical connection panel, even below the level of the lower cowling top.
One is male pigtail (bullet), the other is female. Unplug them, and plug the two wires that are nearest the electrical panel together.
As I said, they are male and female. So they plug together.'
Then test the UP function.

If it works, then the problem is in your tilt limit switch. If not, simply replug back to the original wiring configuration.

Re: Johnson 225 tilt trim

Relays are single pole, single throw switches. With no electricity, both relays connect ground to the PTT motor. When energized, a relay connects +12VDC to the PTT motor. Since the relays are new, I will assume they are good. So, make sure the primary of the relay gets +12V from the PTT switch and the hot lead to the relay secondary winding has good voltage as well. I suspect the conection of the secondary winding has a dirty connection, giving low/no voltage to the relay.

Your a genius, ok so I did what you said and the motor went up, so I guess I have a bad limit switch, now whats the next course of action, where on the trim motor itself is the limit switch, I see a small arm that touches the engine as it comes down which I believe is the down limit switch, now is there a second one for up or are they one in the same??

Go on the crowleymarine web site and look up the parts for the PTT of your motor. You likely have a trim gauge sender in the transom clamp. Mine has a black plastic arm that is pushed down as the motor decends.

Re: Johnson 225 tilt trim

Thanks Chris1956, I called Johnson Evinrude and spoke to a tech and he actually said that as long as I dont have anything that the motor cover could hit when the motor is fully tilted up then there really is no reason to replace the part, he said that since my motor is mounted to the transom and nothing is really in front of it that is not really necessary. I went out and followed the wires and found exactly what you had mentioned which was a trim gauge sender in the transom clamp. I might actually replace the part eventually but for now at least I can go out on the water. Thanks again guys!!!

Re: Johnson 225 tilt trim

Well, not exactly. The trim gauge sender is the sender with the lever.
The bad part is the tilt limit switch. It is mounted way up under the tilt tube. There is a plastic adjustable cam that actuates the switch. It only affects the UP function. If OPEN all the time, no UP is the result.
Just be sure that you understand that the trim sender IS NOT the bad part. It is the tilt limit switch, and I agree with the Evinrude guy...if the engine cowling doesn't hit anything when fully trimmed up, no need to replace the switch.
