Johnson 225hp lower unit - not sure what to do

I am having issues with my lower unit. Its a 1996 Johnson 225HP. Does anyone know how difficult it is to rebuild this unit. Are there special tools I will need that will make the job impossible without them? I found a gear set for about 300 and seal set for 80.
Anyone know how much something like this should cost if I brought the unit in to a shop and have them do it?

Why not start with an OEM shop manual? Then you'll know exactly what's involved and whether you want to do it or pay someone. There are some special tools involved and some knowledge as well. Cost depends on local labor rates, but most areas run ~ 80 to $110/hr and it's probably a 2.5 to 4 hour job, saltwater motors toward the higher end and perhaps more.

Also, you need to be sure it needs rebuilding before doing anything.
