I have a 1975 johnson elec. start. ON the carb there is a cylinder with rubber bootie on the end with wires coning off the back. Appears to be tied into the choke, can anyone tell me what this is and how to assure itr works. Electric start is only so good when I have to go to the back of the boat and choke it Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Cylinder hAS A STRAP THAT HOLDS IN IN THE MIDDLE STRAP APPEARS TO BE CRACKED IN TWO ALLOWING cylinder to slide a little, does this need to be tight? and how does this work. Even if I am way off base I would still like ot know what it si and how it effects the carbelec choke.jpg

if you'll go to marineengine.com and find your year, hp, and look at the carb diagram..you'll see this choke solenoid..it just actuates the choke from the remote...you should see the rod actuate the choke linkage when the solenoid is energized....be prepared for sticker shock

It is a manual remote choke activated by 12 volts applied either by pushing in the keyswitch or by a push button choke switch. The bracket should hold it tight in place.

look at the choke plate and linkage while someone else < or you with a remote starter switch > tries to start the engine or push on the choke button..don't know your setup..you should see the rod come out of the solenoid

If it's not wired, just apply 12 volts to the wire coming off the solenoid and ground to the case. It should pull the rod on the solenoid in, activating the choke.
