I am working on this motor and it appears someone has previously disassembled the shifter/recoil lockout lever mechanism. I have a '73 Evinrude 40 H.P., but it is nothing similar at all. Does anyone have a exploded view or photo that I could see to make sure this safety device is working properly?

You can tell if it's working if it lits you pull the starter rope only in nuteral. Not the same Mod as mine but that is how my 25 electric works.

Yes, you are correct. My trouble is that it was assembled incorrectly and does not prevent the rope or starter from turning the flywheel in any position of the shifter. On my 1973 Evenrude, there is an actuating lever from the shift lever over to the interlock. This 1972 Johnson is completely different and I assume has something missing, because, well, it does not work and I can see no mechanical trip mechanism.

On the 1972 there should be a U-shaped stainless steel part on the lockout lever. A cam on the bottom of the magneto armature plate contacts the U-shaped piece at throttle settings above the start position, and pushes the lockout lever inward to engage the recoil pulley so you can't pull it. That allows starting in gear, but not at fast throttle settings.

The parts are shown on the BRP website. Look at the powerhead group for the lockout lever and U-piece, spring, etc. Look at the magneto group for the cam that operates it.

Thank you for the excellent info. It was exactly what I wanted to see. I also wasn't aware that the part numbers were so readily available. I thought that this might be the case, as to starting in gear, but I wanted to make sure. It is not my motor, but a friends, and I wanted to make sure his boating experience would be a positive one. Thanks again. The problem was that the u-shaped spring was bent incorrectly and misshapen.
