JOhnson 25hp 1975, oil leak?

I just ran my motor up for the first time since I bought it, ran nicely, but I think it needs a new impeller, so I didn't run it for long.
I placed it on the stand and the following morning I noticed that there was a small circle of oil under it, about 4 inches round.
Excuse my ignorance, but would this be from the exhaust or do I need to replace a gasket? It wasn't losing oil before I ran it.

That would depend on the color of the oil. If it is a black to dark brown you have no problem. Your right it is exhaust that is draining out of the leg. After a few days it will stop. Best of luck. Rick.

Most likely simply exhaust residue. It will smell gassy.
Gear oil has a distinct oil smell. If you haven't checked the gearcase you should change the lube.Just to be sure all is well.Have you done this before?

Thanks for the replies...I've only had the motor a week, and it was after the first time I tried it. This is my first outboard, so it's all a bit of an emotional experience :D
And, no...I've not changed the gear oil yet.
Based on what I've read:
Open the top screw and bottow screw to drain the oil and check for a milky residue, as this will indicate a blown seal and water ingress.
Use an oil bottle that has a pump handle and pump oil into the bottom screw until it starts to ooze out of the top - then replace the top screw and then the bottom.
Is this correct? Is there a way of doing this without the oil pump thing?
Thanks :)

You can use tubes of lower unit oil instesd of the quart bottle with the pump, but can be a little messy if you are not careful.
Make sure to replace the gaskets on the drain and vent screws.

The Pump will be your best friend on this Job...and buying by the quart is cheaper than the tubes...

you can get the pump at most auto stores..its like 7.00

If you have a cabela's close by they were giving you the pump free with a quart of their brand gear oil...it is a synthetic and was 10.99 a quart..they also have thier motor oil on sale like pennzoil full synthetic and some other brands....good prices...

I just seen your from the UK...so forget the cabela's...lol...its good info for others then...lol

Thanks for the answers, I think I'll go for the pump option; although the closest Cabela's is about 2000 miles away ;) There are a bunch on e-bay, so no problem there.

Thanks again,
Dave...
