My first post on here so be gentle. I bought this motor and the thing was all grease and dirty so i brought it home degrease and cleaned the entire engine. Next i installed new plugs, coils, condensers and points. After that it was a water pump and a carb rebuild.
Now for the problems before the carb job it would only start with the throttle wide open and was hard to start cold and wouldn't idle well. When installing the rebuilt carb i started fooling around with the timing cam and roller. I found some info on here as to how to set timing and it said the roller should begin to move once the first mark on the cam is mid way on the roller. Well i did this and cranked the motor in the start position for the first time. well the motor seemed fine but now it wouldn't idle. So i started looking at this roller and it started looking thin as if maybe the actual roller was missing and all i had was the male insert that the roller fit on. To fix this i got out the electrical tape and wraped it to a thickness of .5". Next i started the engine she started fine idled ok so richened the low speed needle and that did the trick. What do yall think am i missing the roller or should i take the tape off and look elsewhere? One other thing i have not ran the engine wot since the tape job, so i'm curious how it's running on that end.

Also why is there no high speed needle and how do you adjust the mixture on the high speed. I assume you don't and it is automatic.
Thanks sticky

Yes, there is supposed to be a roller, part # 203362, two bushings # 303279, and an E-ring retainer # 203363. Your tape probably won't last very long.

The high speed is a fixed jet orfice plug in the bottom of the carb bowl, deep in the hole behind the hex head drain plug. No adjustment possible, nor necessary.

Buy a service manual for the motor - paper or CD. If you can get your hands on a copy of the OMC service manual that is best, but they can be scarce. EBay is sometimes a good place to look.

Another suggestion is to take off the tape, take a photo and then go see your local OMC dealer. They can tell you if anything is missing and sell you a new part while you are there if it is.
