Howdy folks, 2 Q's: Have two identical 25RL70E's. 1. one has a (freeze crack?) above prop unit on lower unit. Will it leak oil into water? Is this a major problem that needs repaired? "JB weld" a good fix? 2. second motor has ominous warning tag: "do not start, pump is broken". Is there a way to test this without causing motor damage? -Newbie here with some decent mechanical skills.

just take the lower off the one with the pump issue and put an impeller kit in - something you should automatically do with any new-to-you motor.
takes a couple of hours the first time - probably youtubes showing step by step

+1. Best to inspect/replace the impeller prior to start up just to be on the safe side. You should be able to get one right here at iboats.
