I have a 1990 Johnson 30 Hp tiller (sn J30RESB) converted to a long shaft. This past weekend I experienced a problem shifting from reverse to neutral. When moving the shift handle from reverse to neutral, the reverse does not disengage. Shifter must be moved to forward then back to neutral. This does not seem to be the case when shifting from forward to neutral. Could this be an adjustment or could it be a more serious problem, such as clutch dogs?

Hi Johnnielund

Was the conversion done during your ownership?, if so, how was the shifting beforehand?.
Seems like your shift mech needs adjusting or maybe there is excessive freeplay or binding somewhere. Check and lube all linkages with grease- that should eliminate those probs for starters.
Adjustment is usually required after big mods are made such as yours.

Hope this helps
Nilsson

Long shaft conversion was done prior to my ownership, however shifting always seemed kind of mushy. In other words, you didn't feel that positive click.
