I have a 1969 Johnson 33 HP model # 33EL69A and I need a lower unit case or whole unit and wondering what lower units will interchange with mine or do I have to find the one just for this motor? I have found a lower unit case but its from a 1965 Evinrude 33 hp Skitwin outboard model # 33553B and wondering if this would work using my gears and shafts?

Re: Johnson 33 HP

Should work as a complete unit. Swapping internals---well "probably".

There were 4 basic lower units with non thru-prop exhaust from 1955 through 1970-something.

Electric shift
Manual shift with Timken pinion bearings (25HP)
Manual shift with roller pinion bearings. (33-40hp)

The last ones are divided into two other types, single and double water tubes.

25hp (Timken) units can't handle the increased horsepower
Obviously, electric shift is out
Dual water tubes are out, besides they won't fit.
The last 40hps had different drive shafts
