I have a 1970 or 71 don't know how to tell. Anyway the startor seems to not have enough power to turn the motor it moves then when the compresshion builds it stops. Do i need a new starter? Is it hard to rebuild it? Or is it cheeper and easier to buy a new one.
Anyone no where to find one for a 33hp i can onley finde them for 30 and 35 hp?? I don't know where to look i tried ebay and i boats
Thanks

Very unlikely that you need a new starter, Matt.

First: Remove, clean and reattach all large wires from the battery to the engine and from the solenoid to the starter motor. Clean both ends. Then inspect the wires for swelling or weak spots.

If that doesn't work get your battery load tested.

If that doesn't work, do the voltage-under-load tests in "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs Forum.

Let us know what you find.

I think your idea to have the battery checked at an auto parts store is a good one. Do that and clean all of the wire terminals, as suggested.

The starter on your motor is common to many other OMC motors. It can be found on the early sixties 28 hp, the late fifties 35 hp motors, and all of the 35 - 40 hp "Superquiet" models. Some of the older versions of this starter had only two brushes, rather than four. You can tell the difference by looking for large, straight slot type screw heads on the side of the starter body. If there are two of them, it is a two brush starter. If there are four, it is a four brush starter.

I agree that a weak starter is usually not the problem, when problems such as yours are encountered. That said, weak or nonfunctional starters are not unheard of. The good news is that they can still be rebuilt and they can be purchased on the internet. The same starter has also been used on a number of small industrial engines, so they can be found in that market as well.

Re: johnson 33ho startor problem?

I cleaned all terminals same thing, but when i get the flywheel on i will hook up a car to the battery and jump it and see if it gives me the power. I didn't want to think it was my battery because its a trolling motor one an it has a 30 min reserve and it was about 200$ but it is 4 or 5 years old .
If battery is problem what should i get can i use a car battery? These marine ones are a rip off they are 1/2 as much as the boat? I can get a cheep die hard or something.
Thanks Matt

Thanks do you have to recharge it often? once a season or what? I trickle charge my ski batteries all winter and they are 100% all season.

Your motor may not have a generator/charge system. If it does, the generator will be a belt driven unit located on the port side of the motor, opposite and roughly equal in size/shape as the starter. If there is no charge system, you should check the battery periodically to make sure it is substantially charged. Failure to do this will eventually result in a dead battery, and if done repeatedly, a failed battery.

I use the yellow Everstart marine batteries from Walmart. The largest ones are about $70 and have a three year waranty. I have had to replace a couple over the years and Wally World has always been good about providing a replacement either for free or at a pro-rated discount.
