Hi, i am new to i Boats, I just bought a 14foot Fiberglas with 33hpjohnson for 300$. It is not getting spark but when i hook up a tester it gets a little light. Im thinking it may be the coil or points? Im in the posses of removing the flywheel but someone had broken off one of the 3 bolts that u use to bolt the puller to. I hope i get that out today! Also the starter seems to not get enough power to turn over the engine, i hooked the battery up and still same thing. How hard is it to rebuild a starter?
What would you think it could be?
what oil should i use in the lower gear case? How hard is it to change the water impeller. Thanks Matt
I am going to pick up a manual if i figure out the spark problem.

Matt, 1st lets find out what you really bought, they did not make a 33 in 1971, they build a 33 in 1970. what is the model # of the motor. before you buy anything, remove the plug, and turn the flywheel by hand, feel for any hard spots. lets see if you have a viable base. before putting money into it. someone has already thought of the point, coils, condensers, plug wire, since the bolt are in the flywheel. they used the wrong bolts. you have to use Grade #8 hardened bolts to pull the flywheel, good luck getting those out. the water pump is simple. when you get there if the coils are discolored, or cracked, as suspected, they will need to be replaced, i would do all of it at one time. including plug wires. water pump is an easy job.

but again before, lets get a compression check. if you can't get the starter to turn it over, rope pull it till the screw in compression guage quits going up, and post the numbers here.

ok i figure that its 1970 then the boat itself is 1971. Cylinder 1 is 100 second is 99 about. But its not warmed up. I got the flywheel off. The points are not gaped right i think. Do i line the flywheel key up with the rubber on the points? If so i did that and cleaned up the points and gaped them to .20. Im thinking to just buy all new electrical ****. Points, condenser, coils probably a starter.
It turns over nice when the plugs are out but when the plugs are in it moves then stops like it doesn't have enough power. My lawnmower did this and it needed a new starter.
How do i adjust the coils? do you or are they just bolt on?
Can i test the coils?
Thanks Matt

Your compression is good.
I always replace all of the ignition parts when I get an engine that has parts of unknown age.
The coils just bolt on, but they need to be exactly aligned with the boss on the bottom plate, or the rotating flywheel will hit them.
Right now, a manual for that engine (preferably the OEM manual) would be your best friend and really help in your tune-up.
You'll also need to change the water pump impeller. There's no telling how old that is...

1970 33hp Johnson was model #33R70, 33RL70 (rope start), 33E70, 33EL70 (Electric start)

1971 33hp Johnson was model #33R71F, 33RL71F (rope start), 33E71F, 33EL71F (Electric start)

They were all nearly alike anyway.

cool. i saw some parts for up to 71 i don't know i figure their the same parts.
I just bought a manual and am going to get new points, condenser, and coils also new spark wires and kill switch wires. I got the boat for 300 figured id spend a few to get it up going. So that's cool i got the points gaped but im worried if i put the flywheel back on and it doesn't work im going to have a hell of a time getting it off if something breaks. I screwed up napas gear puller the threads got screwed up somehow. o well i didn't pay for it the guy let me borrow it.
Also i already ordered a new impeller and plugs. I hear the impeller squeaking inside as i move the prop. What kind of oil do i get for the lower gear? and how much do i need.
What do you recommend for 2 stroke mix oil?
Also as for flushing what would you recommend the intake is small and near the trim thing i don't know if the ear muff would work.
Thanks Matt

they flywheel hasn't been off that motor probably in 20 years or if ever. it will come off easier next time. besure to torque the nut to specs, or it will shear the woodruff key. squeaking impeller, must be really dry. use 80-90 outboard lower unit oil, probably 2 tubes, or you can buy the new pump thing at Walmart, and a quart bottle. i've been using Walmarts Super Tech oils for years, their TC-W3 outboard motor oil, lower unit lube, you fuel:eek:il mix, should be 50-1 for that motor. for flushing you are going to have to use a large barrel, they use to make an adapter for those, but they are all gone.

ok ill just live with the barrel. i ordered new coils points condensers plug wires plugs kill switch wiers ext.. this way their will be no way it wont get spark.
Ill install that Friday and hopefully be up and running for the weekend. i got 2 gas cans new fuel line going to change the lower gar oil and impeller this week
also anyone have any ideas for mounting the throttle assy. I might just bolt a 2x4 to the side and screw it to that for now. the wiring was embarrassing. So i riped it all out and am starting over. i have the new wires and switches i am going to get a piece of pvc and run the wires threw that so it will be safe and nice looking. I got one of the flip cover switches (fake carbon fiber) for the lights, looks cool. The steering is bad also its like a lawnmower wheel with a double pulley on the back. it moves all over the place. Ill re designed that and the boat will be great. just hope i get the engine going.
Thanks for the help Matt
