i just bought a 15ft with a 1975 or 76 johnson 40 hp outboard motor. im haveing problems with the wireing at the key. i found the power wire that runs to the switch there is an inline fuse that was blown i cahnged it then i tried statring it. and the fuse blew. so that makes me think the switch is wired wrong. the color of the wires i have are -

red with purple stripe that on is the power wire-

blue wire-

blue wire w/ white stripe-

white

purple w/white stipe that has a different connector my guess choke it plugs into the choke button

any help would be appreciated

Re: johnson 40 hp wir problem

Assuming that your switch is the standard OMC switch with terminals marked: B, C, M, A, M, S (not necessarily in that order).

red with purple stripe that on is the power wire = "B". (battery)

blue wire = Look closer. There is no blue wire. If Black = Regular "M". (magneto)

blue wire w/ white stripe = Look closer again. If Black/White = Raised "M". (magneto)

white = "S". (starter solenoid)

purple w/white stipe = "C" (choke)

The "A" terminal.... This terminal has 12 volts applied to it when the key is in the ON or START position. (accessory)

The purple/white wire..... connected to the ignition "C" terminal, pushing in the key engages the choke solenoid.

If you connect this purple/white wire to a seperate choke switch instead of the "C" terminal, run a wire from the other terminal of the choke switch to the "A" terminal of the ignition switch.
