Johnson 40hp stuck

My 1990 Johnson 40hp outboard doesn't have power trim & tilt. I left it down (in running position)over the winter as recommended in the manual. Now I can't lift it. It feels like it's locked whether the lever is in the locked or unlocked position. I pulled the bolt that adjusts the motor angle, and can get at the tilt cylinder. Everything looks ok - nothing seems kinked or leaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm hoping to use the boat over the 4th of July. Thanks.

Re: Johnson 40hp stuck

Start with a liberal application of WD-40. It's probably got some rust in the pivots. A good yank after applying the penetrating oil will probably free it. If this works, be sure to apply grease everywhere that grease belongs to prevent future problems.

All pivot points were greased, gave a liberal spray of wd40 to anything that looked like it could move. No help. Still can't lift engine. What's next?

Are you sure that your tilt lever is actually releasing the stop?

One of the first things I learned on this Board is that PB BLASTER is many times better than WD-40. I got mine at Kragen Auto Parts but I think most parts houses carry it. When you spray, pay special attention to the lock lever on your Tilt and Trim. Happy Boating, Hal
