Johnson 48 hp SPL

I was given this outboard gentlemen told me it was running on one cylinder only. i'm gonna change plugs and check the coil or could it be something different. model number is VJ48ESLCCC serial# G7757001 not sure what year

Could be many things including a blocked carb not feeding the fuel and more importantly the lubrication in there.
Just a thought.

first things first, check for spark to each plug, then check spark from the plug...if you have spark in both, check compression, if still running bad, rebuild the carbs...

you have a 1988

I have the same motor...they run rough....they seldom run smoooooth

especially on the rack on muffs
