I recently picked up a 48 SPL that Im not sure of the year.
How can I found out what year it is?
When looking at the front of the motor (directly at the carbs), to the left on each carb is a screw, sort of brass in color . What does this screw do and what are the adjustments? (how many turns out?) Thanks, Dave

Re: Johnson 48spl questions

If the screw you are refering to has a spring behind it ,that is the slow speed or idle mix adjustment screw. The final setting of them will vary slightly from engine to engine as to the best sweet spot ,but seating them clockwise and backing them out 1 1/2 to 2 turns is a good starting point. It's always a good idea to count how many turns necessary to seat them for a reference point as well.

Look on the bracket that attaches the engine to the boat. There should be a tag there with the model and serial numbers.
