Johnson 48SPL Tachometer

I just purchased an 18ft Landau pontoon boat with a 1990 48SPL. I need to add a tachometer. I have a few questions: What kind of tach? What pulse setting? Does this motor have an alternator?? Should the tach wire be in the control box or perhaps in the console?
