johnson 5.5 lower unit

i have a 64 5.5 i changed all seals and o rings new impeller when i put it back together it shifts in to f n r fine in netural the pro spins nice and easy in f-r the prop is tough to spin by hand im spinnig it clock wise any ideas

It's a good tight fit. No need to worry. After a good use on the lake, it'll loosen up.

Do a search on 'broken shock absorber' in this forum. I believe your model still used that, and if the spring is broken it can act as you describe. I had that issue awhile back, and there are lots of posts addressing it. Good luck!

how does the shock absorber work is it spring loaded or is it a solid piece

Spring loaded in a 2-piece case. Expands lengthwise when prop hits an obstruction, causing friction so the motor stops spinning. It's designed to save the prop/gears when you hit a rock. They were used when props didn't have rubber-hubs which perform the same purpose. If yours is broken, it's likely expanded too far for normal operation. Again, search this forum for lots of info.

Yea, I second this. Check your shock absorber. When they break, they often press hard against the upper bearing and sometimes breaking it. Did it act like this before you tore it down? If not, then you may have to open it back up and check your work. Especially check the forward gear bearing and make sure the hole is lined up with the little pin in the gear case.
