I have a Johnson 5 horse TN 27 that will start and idle for about 30 seconds and then die suddenly. It smells like gas strongly like it may be flooding. If I let it sit for several hours and then try again it will try to start on the first few pulls. I have resealed the old cork float. Could this be the cause of flooding?

Yep, sure could. The older cork floats soak up fuel and sink. Added varnish only makes the matter worse.

BTW:
It's a bit confusing trying to follow your 4 posts. That's why it's better to keep only one thread going until a problem is resolved. Just reply to the original thread..thnaks.

Chinewalker mentioned a replacement float in this thread. Previous Thread

Were you able to find the new float??

Thanks, I am new to the board. The last thing I want to be is irritating while I ask for your advice.

I was planning on getting a new float, but haven't actually done it yet. Being that the engine started and ran so well I was questioning the need for a new float. Obviously, I would rather not take the carb apart again but it looks like I need to if I want the engine to run properly.

Here is a link for a new float.
http://www.go2marine.com/g2m/action/ViewSkuList/categoryId/13738/mercury_carburetors.html
