Johnson 5 Needle valve settings?

I have a 5 horse TN 27. It will try to start and has run for up to a couple of seconds but then dies. Can anyone give me an idea of the starting settings for the mixture control needle valve and the needle valve on the front of the engine? What does the needle valve on the front of the engine (not on the carb) control?

Re: Johnson 5 Needle valve settings?

Had several and still have 2. Prepping it's little 2 1/2Hp brother for sale as we speak, so I'd like to hear as well.

Never had one apart, but it's a side-draft 2-stroke. The intake charge has a more direct route to the cylinder, but the crankcase doesn't get as much lubrication as a result. So some of the fuel for combustion is diverted directly to the crankcase. That acts as the high speed jet and the one on the carb is for idle.

This is purely an educated guess. How close am I, guys?

the needle in front is the low speed about a turn and a half on each till you get it started so you can adjust them and that is ussally about 3/4 to 1 turn when your done

Thanks guys, I got it running within 5 pulls after adjusting the needles properly. Runs great now, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Dylan.
