I have a 1995 Johnson 50hp j50tle. Most of the time when attempting to start it, it turns over only, no fire. Every once in a while it will fire and the engine starts. Then, it will start again for a while (for the same day for instance). Some folks say it could be the power pack but I hate to spend $100+ and it not be that.

unplug your wiring harness to the controls, now jump the solenoid and see if you have spark, if you do, it is either the kill lanyard, or ignition switch. if not, probably a power pack. try these test. http://www.boatpartstore.com/page32.asp

Ok, thanks. And just o be sure I'm explaining correctly, when it turns over, it turns over good and rapidly. Just no fire. Thanks again.

Re: Johnson 50 no fire

that is what i understood. unplugging the harness takes the ignition out of the circuit, if you have spark with it unplugged, you have a problem in the harness or the ignition switch.

Ok. I am very novice. I'll have to find the harness and solenoid but should be able to. Thanks again.

Thanks tashasdaddy, I believe I found the solenoid below the starter. Can you tell me where the wiring harness to the controls is located? Thanks.

Re: Johnson 50 no fire

Thanks for the pics! I unplugged the wiring harness and jumped the solenoid. Still same results, turning over fine and no spark. So, do you think it is the power pack?
