My brother in law bought an older boat. He says it has a Johnson 50HP. It's been a while since it ran and I'm trying to help him; unfortunately, it's over the phone because he lives 1000 miles away. I asked him to find me the s/n so I could figure out the year and maybe find a manual. He says the s/n is J50BELCO. This didn't sound right--can anyone help me out with this?
I used to have a 73 Johnson 50HP and the s/n was something like 73ESL50 or something like that.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

CO is 1985. From 1980 on they used the word "introduces" with 1 being I, 2 is N and so on with S as 0.

Good luck!

Re: Johnson 50 what year?

Does anyone know what the difference is in a Belgium motor, and how much difference from my old 73 50 HP electric shift (would my old manual get me most of the way there, lower unit excepted?) Or should I start looking for a new manual?
Thanks, Rich

Hi Knot
Which manual do you presently have? You will need one that covers this model/year. The basic idea is still the same. The ignition,VRO oiling system, fuel system, are differnt. Quite a few details that you will need to be up to date on.
