Hi
I fitted a new water pump kit, with housing, on my 1980 Johnson 55 today. The impeller that came with the water pump kit was different to the old one in that it had the plastic cam as a key instead of a metal pin.

Everything went together O.K, but there is a bit of play in the impeller before it comes up solid. I'll try to explain that better! I could turn the impeller by hand 1/4 to 1/2 an inch before it locked onto the driveshaft.

Is that normal with the cam type keys? There were two different size keys in the kit. The first was white and was too small. The impeller just spun on the drive shaft without engaging at all. I fitted the bigger key which was black. The impeller will lock onto the drive shaft and I could turn the drive shaft by rotating just the impeller. I'm just concerned about the play.

What you are see'ing there is normal. That plastice cam, or wedge lock's the impellor to the shaft. Force on the impellor makes the cam just fit tighter.

O.K, thanks R. Johnson. Just wanted to make sure it was normal.
