Got a Johnson outboard 2 stroke motor:
Moden Number#: LD-10S
Serial Number #: J2497362

I don't know what year it is, and I don't know what is wrong with it. I bought it a month ago and it wouldn't start. I changed one of the coils out in it and then the motor cranked up like a champ. I took it out on the water and it took a couple of cranks and then it started right up. Then when i turned the throttle back and the choke down, it quit on me. I tried starting it again the same way and it started right up again, I started to move along about 100ft and then it quit on me again. After that I couldn't get it to budge on cranking. Any suggestions?

How much trouble/money is it going to be in order to rebuild the carb?

That is probably a TD-20, made from 1946 to 1949.

Fuel mix is 24:1. If you are running 50:1 it may be trying to seize.

Spark plugs are Champion J8C (replaces J8J) gapped at .030".

Go to the Engine FAQs and do "Outboard won't start" troubleshooting.

Let us know what you find.

I did put a new gas mixture in the tank before I took off from the house today and mixed it 50:1 when I did it. Possibly the problem then? Are you sure that it was that year range? I found another listing that put it in at about 1965, I can't seem to find out for sure if I am suppose to use 24:1 or 50:1.

LD-10S is a 1965. No shift, right? I have the same one. 50:1 started in 1964. Shouldn't make a difference though. Check the fuel flow from the tank to the carb to make sure it's all clear and functioning.

Evinrude Boater:

That picture you attached is the identical motor I am using. I checked the spark plugs by laying it against the block and got a spark on both of them. How do I check the the fuel flow from the tank to the carb?

Ok so I check the metal block that the fuel line goes into and it has a line coming out going into the carb. I pulled the side of that part( not sure what it is called) off and there was all kinds of gunk and debri on that metal screen. I cleaned all that out and it still didnt start. I pulled the fuel line off the carb to see if fuel is pumping through the line to make it to the carb and fuel pumped out when I gave the bulb a squeeze. Are there any suggestions what I should do now?

Do a proper spark test. Laying the plugs against the block is not a spark test. It should jump a 1/4" sharp pointed gap in open air.

Fuel pump screen. Chances are you have gunk through the carb and a complete disassembly and cleaning is required. Take it slow and methodical if you're unfamiliar with the process. Make sure you note what goes where and which way. Take photos and notes as you go.

Do you know of any links that will point me in the right direction for disassembly?

Re: Johnson 5hp motor problems Please Help!!

Ok now, I have pulled the carb and cleaned it out the best I could and then put it all back together. The motor started right up after a couple of pulls. thanks for the advice on the carb cleaning. My motor however, does not have a shut off/kill switch. Just knob to adjsut the needle, a throttle, and the choke. Having a hard time getting the motor to shut off when I do get it started now. Tried pushing throttle all the way back, then I pulled the gas line and choked it out. There has got to be an easier way to do this. Any advice?

You likely need to adjust the carb linkage. You'll likely need a manual to do it properly. I can look at mine tonight a see what I can type up for you. Friends here want to go tubing so I'm a little short on time.

Thank you a ton for the help. Everyone has offered great advice, however your advice has been right on the nose of my specific problem. It is always better to talk to someone who has the exact same motor. I will stand by and wait for your next response at your convenience. Thanks again.

Bobby, to synchronize the carb you need to line up the mark in the armature plate with the roller on the right side, assuming yours in the same as mine. When these are lined up that is when the carburetor linkage should start to open. If there's adjustment to do, there are two screws under the armature plate that can be loosened to move the plate either way.
I shot a short video explaining the process and I'm going to up load it to YouTube. My camera battery is dead now so it will likely take a few hours before I get it done.

I checked out the video and it was a little off from the mark. Thanks for the handy video. That was awesome of you to do that for me. I noticed that the left side of the armature plate was hitting another piece. I have to give the throttle a little hard push when it hits that point in order to get it all the way back. Is it suppose to be this way or is that something I need to adjust? I have attached a picture of the two points that are hitting each other to give a better idea of what I am talking about. I have tried adjusting the armature plate but was unsuccessful in getting it to miss this other piece.

Yeah, there's something wrong there. The armature plate should clear that linkage. E-mail me a good size photo and I'll compare to mine and see if I can figure out what askew.
