First, thanks for taking time to read this, and if you reply with thoughtful info... God Bless You!
It is a Johnson 60 hp engine from a 1990 Bass Buggy. It has sat for about 2 years with soured fuel. I emptied the fuel, refilled with high octane gas and 50:1 oil mix, and replaced the battery. After some patient prodding, I am able to get the engine to start consistently. However, it will almost immediately begin to loose RPM and die unless I engage the ignition fuel thing-a-ma-jig (pushing the key in for fuel flow normally used for starting) every couple of seconds. Using this method, I think the engine would continue to run and run. I actually took it down the river a 1/2 mile and back and it continued to run with me pumping this ignition switch for fuel flow.
2 questions:
1) What is causing likely this and what is the remedy?
2) I need diagrams / photos of this engine with identification to become familiar enough to attempt some maintenance like cleaning the carb or other. I bought an online SELOC manual but it has very limited graphics for me to learn from. The Johnson manual set from that year costs $100 plus as a digital reprint from Johnson's service provider. Suggestions?
Thank you again for your time and help!!!
