Johnson 60 hp - 92, hard to start when warm

Hi,

I have problem starting my johnson 60 hp outboard when it is warm. When it is cold I start it easily by giving it a little bit of throttle, pushing the key a couple of times and then it fires up. I might need to push the key a couple of times to keep it running in the beginning, but then it runs fine.

If I shut down the engine when it's warm and just after a minute tries to start it there is no problem. The problem is if I let it stay off for a couple of minutes when warm. Then it doesn't matter even if I push the key or what I do. The only solution I found working is to open up the primer solenoid manually by turning it a couple of times back and forth and then start it with little bit of throttle.

My thought right now is that it might be something with the stator so it gets a weak spark when warm, but I'm no expert. Have you seen something similar?

Thanks!

Yes you do not know how your primer works or how to use it. Pushing the key in if the motor is not turning over does nothing at all. The Primer is an open close valve only, it is the fuel pump that pushes the fuel through it. So when cold starting the motor give it throttle and push the key in while the motor is turning over. As far as warm starts go you may need to give it a little throttle to fire up. Moving the red lever back and forth does nothing for the primer. All that does is change the valve inside from manual to electric operation. If the red lever is in line with the body it can be used electrically. If it is turned it can be used manually by pumping the fuel line ball and that will push fuel through it.

Hi,

Yes I think I know how it works. Replaced both fuel pump and primer solenoid. My impression is that I have a bit of fuel pressure between the pump and the solenoid that squeeze fuel while pushing when it's not running, maybe I'm wrong. When I move the red lever when the motor is warm and hard to start I hear a small noise sounding like fuel passing by the solenoid. Could it be something else I hear? Air? It must be something as it helps me to start the motor.

Are you using the throttle? All you are doing is releasing a minor amount of fuel pressure from the system by turning the lever. Not enough to do anything. If you want to use it manually just turn the lever and pump the ball no reason to turn it back and forth. My guess is it is your starting procedure as much as anyhting.

I'm open for it being my starting procedure, I've tried :
- throttle 50 % open and turning key
- throttle 30 % open and turning key
- pushing the key and then turning the key with 30 % throttle
- pushing the key and then turning the key with 50 % throttle
- moving red lever on primer solenoid and the starting with 30% throttle (only thing that has worked)

Any other suggestions?

Is your primer solenoid working? Can you here the click when the key is pushed in?

Sorry,----There is a need for you to learn how the electric primer valve works.-----Ask a shop to explain it to you !!----Ask a shop to explain the starting of this motor.

Hi,
Yes the solenoid is working and I know how it works. Did some more tests today and I manage to start the engine by turning the key and pushing the key as with the red lever. But it is a fact that it is much harder to start it when it is warm.
