Hi guys, just was gifted an absolutely mint Johnson 6R-69M. Brought it home and it fired on the second pull. Idles incredibly smooth, throttles up fine, shift, etc.

I am going to be using it on a high pressure floor west marine 310 dinghy. The shaft measures 20", which I have to imagine was the long shaft version? The dink is going to need the motor raised a bit, so I'm up in the air on how to achieve that. My thought is to add about 5" of same thickness plywood to the transom to get the cavitation plate up near the bottom of the hull. I'm guessing converting this to a short shaft is out of the question given the age.

Anyways, any info you all have on this motor would be great (manuals, tips, etc) I went with 50:1 for this first tank.

Are there prop upgrades available for this unit?

Of course this is all a little premature, I have yet to run it on the boat.

Thanks

That is not a long shaft motor. It is a short shaft for a 15" transom (they actually measure closer to 17", following the transom board). I suppose it still has the original water pump impeller in it? If so, you should change it because a 47 year impeller is not to be trusted, even if it looks good.

Yes, 50:1 is the correct mix.

Prop upgrades? I suppose so, Google Michigan wheel.

You are absolutely correct, I just measured it and it is about 17" to the cav plate. The motor has been maintained by the previous owner, not original impeller, new plugs, etc.

That is great news about the shaft length, as our dink is a 15" transom. I just mounted it there and it is within 1-1.25" of the bottom of the hull, so I think we should be ok. Thanks!

don't bother with the prop I have used a johnson 6hp on 3.1m air floor and it went well with just me and my fishing tackel, but wouldn't plane with two people
