Johnson 6hp gear oil

Once again I return to the forum for guidance.
I recently bought a 1990 Johnson 6hp (2 stroke) that has done very little work, being only used as a backup. It runs great and after a period in a test tank I removed it from the bench and laid it down flat on the floor (in the normal way with the tiller and mounting bracket facing up). A few days later I put it back on the bench and some gear oil started leaking out at the top of the extension section (its a long shaft). Is this normal? If not, what could the cause be? Could a seal have gone near the gear shift rod?
All advice welcomed and greatfully received
Graeme

Re: Johnson 6hp gear oil

If it is gear oil. Then no its not supposed to leak. If oil can get out then water can get in.

It would be my guess that what you are seeing is unburned fuel mix that is inside the exaust leg. Not uncommon. I wouldnt worry about it.

I would drain lower unit and see if it has taken on water. Will be milky looking.

Lower unit needs to be resealed if this is the problem.

Good luck!

Re: Johnson 6hp gear oil

Thanks Lee. I dropped the lower leg yesterday and drained the gearbox. Everything looks to be in order (no milkyness) so I'm going with your suggestion that its just unburnt oil and crud.

Thanks for the reply. Lets just hope I remember to put lube back in the gearbox!

Graeme
