Johnson 7.5 fuel connector

I've boought a sailboat with Johnson 7.5 hp outboard. Yesterday we lost the fuel connector. I am a total newbie and maybe it's not the right term. It's a thing you put on the end of fuel hose that allows you to connect hose and outboard. And btw, when was Johnson 7.5 hp made? I guess it's pretty old...

Johnson 7.5s were made for many years, Glen.

Fortunately, they all use the same fuel line connector which you can get at any marine store and even many Wal Mart sporting goods depts.

Well, hold on there. The old 7.5 motors used a pressurized fuel tank and twin hose. If that is what you have, they are still available....for close to $100 !!!! They even bring $50 or more on e-bay for used ones. Maybe somebody stole yours? Do you have theft insurance?

If it was made anytime in the last 40 years it's a regular old non-pressurized tank-type connector.

The connector is $119.95 at ishopmarine for the old Johnsons('56-'58).

I cant imagine that a sailboat would have a 50's 7.5hp, but it's possible I reckon!

"Pretty old" is relative. A 7.5 from 1981 is not pretty old to me. Heck, I have socks older than that.

I'm with you, BoatBuoy. I consider my 1980's outboards "new".

I imagine he has the newer 7.5 hp, however, two of my 1950's 7.5 hp Evinrudes came off of sailboats so it wouldn't surprise me at all if his was that old.

I agree, my 80's I consider new also and actually want to sell my '86 8hp as it's too new with many newfangled parts in it... what the heck are the coils doing on the outside anyway? Who came up with that dumb idea!!!

LOL!

I'd really like to know why they abandoned the tried and true points system on those little motors. Sure they needed a little maintenance. I'll take that over a failed powerpack and sitting at the dock any day.

Yep, and not much maintenance... And what about the pull start? The simple spring over the flywheel worked great. The only reason they moved it out and to the front was to lower the profile... But it gets in the way on the outside... just like the coils and wiring... sigh... oh well... it's 'progress' I reckon...

My bad. I overlooked the ADs of '56 and '57. They did use the pressure tanks. All of the others, and any ADs that have been converted to fuel pumps, use the "standard" OMC fitting.

Thanks for replies.

The fuel line connector I bought in West Marine today is the same as this one here.

But it does not fit the tank connector that is on my engine. I have a different one. Mine has only one male part. Is it possible that the previous owner for some reasons changed the tank connector? Will try to replace it...

Maybe a previous owner rigged a fuel line to run the Johnny from a Merc or Chrysler tank. The fitting you got would fit an OMC tank.

Just what model engine do you have? Does the tank have two lines', or one?

I have Johnson 7.5, year unknown. The tank has one line. The fuel line connector I bought that is supposed to be the same for all Johnson outboards (according to the replies above) does not fit the tank connector on my Johnson 7.5. I'd guess that the previous owner replaced the tank connector with some other (or he applied decal "Johnson" on a motor from Merc?). My question is whether tank connectors from different vendors are replaceable? At the link I sent looks like tank connectors have the same diameter. And why does somebody need to replace connectors with other vendor?

Glen, please post your motor's model number and a photo of the connector if possible so we can figure out what we are dealing with. It is extremely odd that someone would replace the motor's fuel connector. It is less likely that you have an incorrectly re-badged motor.

You need to figure what connector you have and get the matching one. You could just take it to your local marina where they could take a look and tell you on the spot what connector you have.

I know I have an Evinrude motor that has a Mercury tank. Maybe that is what you have. To me it would be highly unlikly, almost impossible, to change the fitting on the motor though. Probably just the tank. IMO

My connectors on my tank side look like this and this. At least similar. Hope this helps.
