Johnson 70 inner exhaust housing seal question.

I've been putting together a 1995 70 Horse Johnson. (J70TLEOR) I just realized (after already bolting back up lower unit) that the manual calls for using Adhesive M sealant to the inside of the exhaust housing seal, and Triple-Guard to outer surface. I put in a new seal, but I just pressed it in place when I installed it. I didn't use either of the above products. Is this a necessity? Should I drop the lower unit and apply the sealant and grease as directed or not to worry? Thanks.

The adhesive holds the rubber seal in place while you install the lower unit. Not really necessary, unless the seal slipped out of place. When you crank up the motor, on water muffs, check to see if you are getting excessive exhaust coming out of the horizontal vents, just above the cavitation plate. If so, then the seal maybe pinched, allowing exhaust to escape between the inner and outer housings.

I was told by a couple of people here that you could not replace the exhaust cover gaskets on my 115 without removing the powerhead but I did it. Not sure about the 70 but on the 115 if you can get a tool on the bottom bolts it can be done. Especially if you cleaned things up pretty good before putting it back together. I wouldn't want to try it with rusty bolts.

Oops sorry guess I didn't read the original post closely enough. I thought you were talking about the inner and outter exhaust manifold cover on the powerhead.

Thanks. That's what I'll do. Appreciate it.
