iv got a 16 foot glasspar avalon that i bought a 70hp johnson for. i havent had it in the water yet because i have not finished the restoration. do you think 70hp will be a good fit? it had an old 40 johnson when i bought it. id love to stick with a 40-50hp but i would like to reach higher speeds than 30mph sometimes too. any advice will be appreciated. thanks

I've got a '67 80hp on my 16' Avalon. What year is your 70hp?

I have been running a 1980 70hp on an old 1979 shallow vee 16' Hewescraft sled for some time, performance is great.

my motor is a 75' i can tell it has very low hours, under the cowling is spotless and the compression test showed numbers that are factory spec so its got to still be putting out close to 70hp

A 70 should be an ideal motor for most 16' boats.

Depending on prop, I'd imagine you'd run in the neighborhood of 40mph or more. I'm getting 34mph with my old Johnson(with a crappy gear ratio) and 10 1/4 X 10 prop. That's with 12 gallons of gas, 350lbs of people, and some gear.
