Johnson 70HP Square Impeller Key?

Hi All,

I finally managed to get the corroded impeller off of the driveshaft on my replacement '82 70HP lower unit. Now, I have a new problem - there is no flat side to the shaft, and the impeller key is square. In fact it looks like the key is either permanantly part of the shaft, or it is corroded on to it. Unfortunately, all of the impellers that marine guys want to sell me for this unit have a round key, like the one on my old lower unit. Can I chisel the square key out of there and fit in my old round key, or do I need a special impeller to fit? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Okay, I managed to get it off, and it is square on the outside but rounded on the inside, like a taco shape. Is this the standard issue, i.e., can I but the 18-3053 sierra impeller unit to replace the current one? Thanks much for any help.

sounds like you have an older drive shaft (gearcase) then was shipped with motor
ask your dealer to look up a key for some older models should be a woodruff key and then buy impeller to fit
