Hey Guys, I have a 1980 Johnson Stinger 75 hp outboard motor. I am now having trouble with the ignition. The top cylinder is firing fine, the middle cylinder is hit and miss, and the bottom cylinder is not firing at all. I don't think the problem is in the coils. Could it be the power pack? I ran the boat the other day and it ran fine in full throttle, then when i came back to an idle it started missing. If anyone with experience with my problem can help it will greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Stinger 75

Re: Johnson 75 hp ignition troubles

Hi Stinger,
I have the exact same motor and had the exact same problem about 4 seasons ago. Turned out to be the powerpack on mine. Coils are USUALLY okay if they don't LOOK bad - .ie cracked, melted, etc.
Two cheap and easy tests...
If you happen to know someone with a similar 3-cylinder OMC from about 1979 to the mid 1980s (must have same plug hookups), see if they'll let you swap out the powerpack. It's a fairly easy swap and you'll know right off the bat if it fixes the problem.
If you're unsure of the coils, try swapping them - from a known bad cylinder to a known good one and see if the problem follows the coil.
- Scott

Thanks Chinewalker. I am fairly sure that I have narrowed the problem down to the power pack. I am going to replace it and see what happens. Thanks for your help. Kelly
