Hello my Johnson (6BA76A) won't idle, runs great when i give some gas. Cleaned the carbs, got a new fuel pump I think my idle problem has got something to do with the mixture set in front of the carb(rich/lean knob). How do I adjust this setting. And... if anyone knows a setting for the carb that would just be fine.

Dennis

Re: Johnson '76 won't idle

wile troubleshooting my 88 15hp johnson, I took apart the carb, and gave it a shoty cleaning. It would not idle corectly but also ran goot at higher rmp. I cleaned my carb again paying particulare attention to sending a wire down each oriface, I found 1 tiny tiney oriface that was cloged in the vacinity of the center asembly of the float. after cleaning that she idled pretty good.

My OMC manule for this motor proclaims 1 turn out from snuggly closed. Mine found heaven at about 1 and a half, I have seen others recomend from 2 too 2 1/2. My manule also states, get it started and let it warm up, then turn it in a little, wait a few second then turn in some more til it starts to die. then turn it out about 1/4 a turn and that should be it. I am by no means a mecanic, but this is what the book said for mine, and How I got mine runing.

Pull the carbs.
Strip down and clean each jet one by one.
(and I mean c l e a n )
Make sure float is letting in enough fuel.
Good luck.

Re: Johnson '76 won't idle

I took my carb out and cleaned very good. Now is the question, how can I adjust idle speed. The jet and the shaft the needle is going into are turned till seated. When I put my carb together there is only 1 point I can adjust. (rich/lean knob) Is it possible to adjust idle with it. I've put some pictures on the web so yoy can see how my carb looks like. pictures

Thanks again for the reply, you're all a great help to me

Re: Johnson '76 won't idle

Hi Dennis
The top picture, the two things you have circled are the main nozzle (center) and the float valve body. There is no adjustment to be made here. Both peices need to be removed for cleaning though. There is a little gasket that goes on the main nozzle between nozzle and bowl, make sure it gets on there. When you reassemble the float and float valve needle, be sure the float is adjusted so that it is paralle to the carb body when inverted. Second picture, The starting setting for the low speed needle is 11/2 turns out from litely seated.
