johnson 85 V4 Hydro Electric drive 1969, Gear Slip

My engine is a johnson 85 V4 Hydro Electric drive 1969 the engine will run perfectly then appears to jump out of gear. the engine continues to run but the teltale stops squirting water. i have replaced the gearbox with a second hand one but it still has the same intermitent problems.<br /><br />Where the main shaft pushes into the back of the engine could this be rounded of or worn?

I think you might be on it there. If the teltale stops, then there is a very real chance that the drive shaft is not turning anymore.<br /><br />Pull it out and have a look!

A forward, or jump out of gear is rare on a hydro-elctric drive because of the way it works'. You say the tell-tale stops working, there was no tell-tale in 69. Are you sure of the year of that engine?
