Hi folks! I registered here beacause of the sea of knowledge thats in here, hope to get some help and maybe i can contribute with something as well eh:)
Fairly new to big outboards, have had two johnson 9.9 hp but decided to up the power now.

I came across a 85 ESL73M for 170 usd beacause the guy thought it was poor piston rings and needed to be opened and rebuildt. When i came home i pulled both heads to inspect the cylinders, they looks very good and can feel the air pressure from the "low comp cylinder" same as the other three cyl when i push the flywheel.
I have heard that rings can be stuck on these motors but so vil try to machine the head surfaces and bolt it up with new headgaskets and rebuild the carbs. Planning on try it on the lake after this has been done.

But if it shows that syl number 3 really have bad comp, then i will replace the whole powerhead with one with more power than 85 hp.

Question one: should i spray something in the supposedly bad cylinger, and let it sit for a couple of days before i mount gaskets and puts it together? Can brake fluid be used?

Question two: wich powerheads does fit bolt on my '73 mod?

Some babble here, but it was needed:)

You should have checked the compression on it before you pulled the heads. Oh'well. After you get the heads back on check the compression before you do anything else. Put some ATF in the bad cyl, roll it over and leave it sit.

You can also use the Bombardier product "engine tuner". It will dissolve carbon from around the ringsets, possible freeing them up if they are stuck. V4 powerheads up through the 1976 model year should fit on that midsection.

Ill try that boobie,i should checked the comp first but had no way of doing it without control unit and i got eager to look at the cylinders:)
they look nice and not a single mark on all four, iknow further down it can be another story but it turns beautyfully.

emdsapmgr: il see what kind of carbon remover i find here (norway). where there any 140 hp between '73 and ''76 who will fit?

well i just made a order on headgaskets, carb rep sets,a 90 degree elbow and nipple to fit a tell tail.
will soon test comp.

small bubble back inside.jpgThe 140 hp engines started in 1977. The block was changed that year. An exhaust divider was was removed from he exhaust chest, permitting an extra 5 hp. This is a 135 block with the modification.

I wouldn't take off any more than necessary to clean them up. We had different gasoline in 1973. You don't want to be taking chances of destroying it with pre-ignition or detonation.

Re: johnson 85ESL73M

You can place a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and rub the head on it in a figure 8 pattern to clean it up and remove any high spots.

I have no clue what the KG1 is, but it probably won't hurt anything as long as it isn't water based. Sorry, language barrier here and I can't read the instructions.

If you find that you indeed do have low compression, next step is to remove the intake and exhaust covers and look in to see what's going on. You will be able to inspect the rings and piston sides, at least where they are exposed through the ports.

I will try the figure 8 pattern on the heads, what kind of grid (?) roughness on sandpaper? I poured a cap of mallory outboard two-stroke tcw-3 oil in all cylinders yesterday. Will also try redex petrol engine cleaner just to smooth everything in there. Will deff remove those covers to inspect sides of pistons.I will be able to check the compression in about a week when my order arrives. will update.

The seal "footprint" changed over the years as the cowlings were redesigned. Those seals were heated into a specific shape to match the cowling. Unlikely the two are shaped the same.

I know the lower cower is different on older and newer, but since it is a rubber seal i thought i could fit it with a warming tool. But i keep searching for the original, maybe im lucky finding one new..

Re: johnson 85ESL73M

well,i have sanded both heads on glassplate with 240 grit and finished with 320,they are now straight! was a bit corrosion where the headgaskets are pressing around cylinders on block, this is now clean. I have red about green goo, that have dried and are hard on top of intake and right under stator, seems like some engines have this, and im thinking its a kind of filling/seal that has been aplyed from factory the time it was new,or is this for sure stator failure?? I have not started this motor ever before, bought it "bad" shape from a non-mechanicish person.

Removed exhaustcover to inspect, and all pistons and rings looks very good,no stuck rings (pressed slightly with a tip mini-tool,no marks on piston sides as far as i could see, very clean all four almost new like looking..

New headgaskets, carb kit++ will arrive very soon in mail,im really looking forward to see what compression numbers i get. Will also replace impeller with plate and housing,+fuelpump with lines.

Have sandblasted the tiltmekaism,alu-primed it and ready for paint, same with exhaust cover. Engine-cower is also soon to be painted white, with new decals.
