Thanks to this site I have been up and running during the last year, but have recently encountered some motor trouble. Its basically power loss - I checked compression (about 110 on all four) and have spark all around, but upon examining the plugs the lower right cylinder facing the motor (#3 I think) plug is clean like new. Just wondering where to start on this problem diagnosis/solution - thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Clean, like new, typically indicates a coolant leak into the cylinder.

Most likely culprit, on that engine, is the head gasket.

An easy fix on that one.

Check spark on that cylinder. Is that motor 2 carb or 4 carb?

Re: Johnson 88 spl (1993) question

Thanks for the replies. DJ, I was thinking the same thing and upon checking the head gasket didn't see any signs of it being blown, but of course, that doesn't mean its not so I will change it - it was installed facing the wrong way I noticed. Just wondering if thats not it where to look/test next.

Walker, it is a 2 carb motor, and I do have spark to the cylinder. Thanks again all.

Any fuel on that spark plug? I'd sure take a look at the corresponding carb
