johnson "88" spl: need help w/id

just picked up a wee whaler for the kids used...came with a johnson outboard from a ways back...having trouble identifying it...it runs great<br /><br />serial # off the casing aft of the flywheel:<br />185771 <space & offset> 231 L1<br /><br />date stamp: 9/16/86<br /><br />anyone have any idea about this motor, where i can find out more, get manuals, etc.? thanks.

Those #s arent the serial # you need to look on the motor leg, look for a tag that has model# and serial#. Any omc(bombarie) dealer can order you a service manual, or you can get a clymer manual that covers several engines like yours. They are very basic though.
