I just picked up a '72 Mako 19 with 88 SPL, wondering if anyone knows what kind of top speed this combo should reach & GPH.
Boat weighs 2,400 lbs and I'm wondering if the Johnson will be sufficient - seems that heavier engines don't work well with this boat.
Motor hasn't been run since '11 but had a $1,500 service at same time.
Thanks for any feedback.
Tried posting pics but they wouldn't upload....

Based on the general rule of thumb, 70% of max capacity, you are right below the bottom of the 70% mark. Both 1974 17ft Makos (Angler and Standard) are rated for a 135hp.

It wont be a speed demon, but the 88spl should get you where you want to go, and if the boat is loaded right, it may still get you up on plane.

If you dont get many replies, I'll move this over to the Boat Topics forum.

ran an early '70s 85 on a Mako (17' I think -- friend's rig). Remember it was a little bit of a slow go. Motor was tuned and running well, so guessing it was hull size and configuration. Think Mako hulls handle big power. A slip mate had the bigger hull with a 175 Evinrude, and seemed plenty fast. You might want to insure there is no additional water weight (saturated flotation).
