well, my son and i got a small fishing rig a couple weeks ago . its a 14' flat bottom which we had to replace the wood in the transom (thanks to some of the articles here) which went very well . then we moved on to the motor
(a 1965 johnson 9.5 MQ11) , i found, with some help from some of the folks here, that it needed a fuel pump which was pretty much a straight forward operation . we got it running pretty well in the driveway (little hard to start though) i had to set the idle a bit higher than i thought it should be . it ran in the barrell .
then today we took it to the river , got it started and off we went . when we ran up stream about a quarter mile and it died . before it died it was "loping" sp?and was a real bear to get re-started. once we did i just kept at a slow pace and it ran great we went about 2-3 miles upstream( figuired if worst came to worst we could just drift back to the truck ) we ran that motor for three hours or so at a mid throttle or less speed and it did great . but if i tried to run it either at the high end of the throttle it would die also if i turned it down to idle it also would die . i hope this is just an adjustment issue . but i am lost when it comes to small motors . i can replace parts pretty well , but i dont know where to begin . this motor has an exterior adjustment for the low speed mix which seems to like the lean side a bit .
does it need a new carb ? need adjusted ? as mentioned before i am a newbie with small motors .
