My 1968 Johnson 9.5 has been sitting for few months so I decided I needed to get it our and started. I sat it on the back of the Jon boat and put it in the drum. Hooked the tank up to it and choked it and it started on the second pull. It was running fine and pumping water good but it started to act like it was running out of gas and died. I pumped the bulb and sure enough it had run out of gas. I started it back up and it when it started to act like it was going to cut off I would pump the bulb and it would get back to running normal. The carb was just rebuilt last summer. I checked the float and needle and they seemed to be functioning properly. What do y'all think could be causing this? Thanks

We all think that you need to check the operation of the fuel pump.-Also check o-ring in hose fittings .----Check pick-up tube in your fuel tank.

What is the best way to check the operation of the fuel pump?

Air intrusion into the fuel lines somewhere or fuel pump giving up. If you have never rebuilt it or replaced it then now is a great time to do so.

Remove the fuel line from the carb, direct it into a container then start the motor. The pump should be supplying a steady stream of fuel. If not, time to replace. If it is, Make sure float is floating, or needle is not stuck closed for some reason. Fuel lines ok? No leaks? Vent on your tank ok? Try removing cap to test. Pickup not clogged as mentioned? Another tank will test this.

What is a good fuel pump to buy as a replacement? Or are there rebuild kits available

Does it have the original pump?

I would just buy a new one.

18-7350 is the Sierra

Replaces: 397839, 391638, 395091, 397274

You could also use the 18-7351, just a little bigger. It replaces the 438562. This one might be a bit easier to rebuild than the small square. It uses kit 18-7800 to rebuild.

I think a new diaphragm is all you might need if it is the smal square pump.-Just a few $$ for that one.------If money is not the problem then just get a complete new pump.

I'm always looking to save a little money considering I'm on a high school kid budget. Where could I find a diaphragm?

Available as a single item via a BRP outboard dealer.------Inspect the one you have to see what you need.----Never spend $ without testing and inspection.

I would recommend that as long as you're replacing the pump you should also replace all the fuel lines, especially if they're the same age. Older lines are susceptible to drying out and cracking, and possibly ethanol incompatibility. At the very least, it couldn't hurt.

I have a '64 9.5 that did this with the original fuel pump, but it only did it when in the test barrel with the fuel tank on the ground. Raising the tank so the pump didn't have to draw the fuel against gravity so much would "cure" the problem. It still worked OK, but I went through all my old outboards four years ago and replaced all the fuel lines and fuel pumps just to avoid ethanol-based problems. The lines under the cowl were all stiff and harder than they should have been for good performance. Your lines, if original equipment, are the same age now mine were then.

It had new lines put on when they rebuilt the carb. I had the tank sitting on the bench seat of the Jon boat it was mounted on. I am going to try to test the fuel pump tonight if I get home before dark if I don't get home in time I will test it tomorrow

Re: Johnson 9.5 runs for a little while then dies

I took the cover off the fuel pump to look at it then put it back together and started the motor up to test it and it had a steady stream coming out. I hooked the line back up and restarted it and it ran fine in the tank so I hooked the Jon boat to the 4 wheeler and took it back to our pond to test the motor like that and it ran for over 30 minutes no problem so I guess something just wasn't tight on the fuel pump and I tightened it up when I put it back together

all good. Important to know when to stop -- don't fix it if it ain't broke.
