your powerhead is secured to the cowling and intermediate housing area with rubber mounts, which do deteriorate and eventually fail. Pretty common. OMC really over-engineered this generation of motors and you really need a factory service manual to get anywhere with these kinds of repairs..... kencook.com.

MQ-12 is a 1966. I maintained a whole fishing camp full of those things, and broken upper front mounts were extremely common. I got so good at it that I could replace them under the shade tree in record time. But for anybody else, get ready for a major experience.

The whole motor has to be shucked out of the outer shell. Don't even think of it unless you are mechanically inclined AND have the factory service manual. You can get there without the manual, but you will be fussing & cussing.

There is another part that gives just as much trouble: A rubber bellows-type seal on the upper shift rod. While you have the thing shucked out would be a great time to replace it. When it rips, the motor won't run with the hood on.

I might add that the mount and shift rod seal are no longer made. I think I have one mount left somewhere in my stash.
