New member need some help.

Here is a short video and problem description:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5xEorpiWiQ

Please have a look at the video and comment on the water flow. Does it look like the pump would need to be changed?

The engine stopped shortly after the end of the video. (few sseconds)
I had to wait half an hour before it want to restart again.
Cold compression is about 80 pounds according to my (+/- 10 pounds) compression guage. It's exactly the same after the short run shown on the video. It's equal on both cylinder.

I can see sparks on both plugs when removed from the head.

What would be the next thing to verify?

Thanks

Fred

Nobody can tell if the water flow looks normal by watching the video?

Re: Johnson 9.5 / water pump

I have a 71 Johnson 9.5 HP and that looks way better than my water flow after a new water pump and housing a few weeks ago. I'm assuming you're running the engine warm? What year is the motor or do you have the serial number? Most of these older motors will just sputter until you're in gear and moving, but sitting in water like you've got don't normally produce this much water. Is the thermostat missing?

There appeared to be a lot of air being blown out along with the water. If it hasn't been changed in the last two years, I'd change it.

It's odd it won't start for half an hour after running. Are your coils cracked? (They're under the flywheel.) Is everything dry on the powerhead and have you verified no leaks? After running it when it will no longer start, do you still have fire from the plugs? Can you verify that you get blue sparks from both plugs when cranking it over at that point? Or, is there a gas problem? You can rule out carburetion if you have a spray bottle of gas/oil mix that you can squirt into the carburetor. That elminates gas tank, line, fuel pump, fuel filter, carb, etc. and is many times a problem. 80 psi sounds okay for an older 2 stroke. Have you changed ignition - condensor, plugs and points - recently?

What lex said. If that's a cold motor it shouldn't be shooting any water out until it comes up to temp. Stuck thermostat is a likely candidate. Water pump looks to be healthy as all get-out though.
