Johnson 9.5 won't idle

Hello guys,

I have a 1971 Johnson 9.5 H.P. that dies when I try to idle it down. Pumping the primer ball does not help at all. I took to carb off, took it apart, cleaned it and it still acts the same.
The previous owner spent alot of money at a boat engine repair shop, and they couldn't fix it either.
It looks like the carb, fuel pump, fuel lines, all look new. The engine runs great at middle to high rpm but will not idle down with out dying. Pulling the choke out helps a little but not a whole lot. Thats why I thought it was fuel related.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Case1950

To eliminate a rather common problem, how does it work with the cover off? Same?

Yes it acts the same, I forgot to mention that in the original post.

I read about that problem just looking around the forum. Never would have thought of that though.

thanks,
Case1950

Did you set the lean-rich knob?

Do you know what the compression is?

At the motor end of the tiller, right side, is a knob that can be turned to the point where the motor will keep running. Have you set that?

Yes Ezeke is right, I have a 1971 9.5 and I had to adjust both the lean rich knob and the idle dial on the motor end of the tiller handle. Give that a try.

Re: Johnson 9.5 won't idle

I haven't done a compression check yet. Maybe I will try that in couple of days. I have played with the lean rich knob, and that doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference. I'm not familiar with the idle dial on the motor end of the tiller handle, but I will look at that also.

Thanks for the help so far. I will try to get back with more info soon.

Case1950
