Hi, Mike.

What year Johnson 4 stroke do you have?

It is likely that your kill switch (different from ignition switch) is preventing 12v to the powerpak. It is the one you hook your lanyard to.

:)

Hi, Mike. Well, I guess you'll need to get a voltmeter and trace the circuit to see what isn't doing what it is supposed to do.

Good luck. :)

Re: johnson 9.9 4 stroke

In 1998, Johnson built two different 9.9 4-Strokes, a 211cc and a 305cc. Both use a cdi ignition system, neither requires 12 volts to the power pack. Both systems use a charge coil, which produces the operating voltage which fires the plugs. The smaller one uses a sensor coil to control spark timing, the large bore uses an optical sensor, which is powered by a power coil.

The appropriate service manual and test procedures are required to trouble shoot any ignition system or, you're just going to end up replacing parts until you hit the right one.

A total "no-spark" situation can be caused by the stop circuit (the switch or the wiring), no output from the charge coil, no output from the sensor coil (or optical sensor), or a bad pack. The big-bore with has the optical sensor built into the pack.

What do you have??

-John
