I tested the under flywheel components which are a typical green and black OMC coil and a beige colored small coil. Thought that because the wires had current coming thru from a test light they were good. After trying out a few spare CDI's I had laying around and none of them working I am back under the flywheel for the 3rd or 4th time suspecting those coils. Got out the old CDI troubleshooting guide and tried to do my best with that being electrically challenged as I am. Finally found the diode reading on my meter and got no reading and also no resistance readings either that now makes me think those under flywheel coils/trigger are the problem even though both coils look clean and in top condition. Get current through the ignition coils on the outside of the motor and don't suspect them as IT seems one would fail and not both. Spent all day on this to no avail.H-E-L-

check the wiring to those parts under the flywheel, often from all the rotating that necklace does they crack internally when aged some

I pressed the kill switch with a test light on it and nothing changed. Wires look good under the flywheel. I will totally disconnect the kill switch later today.

I unbolted the ground wire on the kill switch from the top of the top coil and no change?

You disconnected it from the coil or the switch? Disconnecting at the switch won't matter if the wire is shorted elsewhere.

It sounds like you have a grounded wire or connection, trace them all.

From the coil so if grounded closer to the switch it won't make a difference. Do you think the problem could be stator or charger coil under the flywheel?

Ok, So I have been tracing wires and still think something is not right with the stator/charge coils. I removed the stator and there was a lot of rust on one of the mounting posts. Is that an important ground point? I think not as it is part of the aluminum stator plate??? Someone in the past has cut the 4 wires going to the stator/charge coil and spiced them with a professional looking splice with heat shrink. So there must have been a problem before. Any thoughts?

rust there is a common sight causing no issue, you dont want them grounded. check voltage output from stator

Well, I did it by the "by guess - by gosh" way and after messing with all the components multiple times I GOT SPARK. Also involved with this process were some spark tester problems too. Older eyes liked the tester with the orange bulb, but no more as it failed along the way and extended my spark problems. Going back to my northern bush method of simply looking at the plug tip or using the gap tester as often advised on this site. This outboard is running at speed but seems to want to die back to idle. Will be looking at this now. As outboards in general go, this one was a nightmare on Johnson Street.
