Hi guys.

My '85 Johnson 9.9 has been leaving post-use puddles of milky oil on my driveway. I'm pretty sure I have a seal leak, but in my search for answers, I've read that 2-strokes can have residual motor oil drip out as well, which can be mistaken for a leak. I'm hoping you guys can help figure out which it is.

The facts:
-Chocolate milk colored oil
-Leaking directly out from the hub
-Seems to only slowly leak for several hours after it's been used

Looking forward to input. Thanks in advance.

Looks just like the unburned fuel/oil coming out of the exhaust hub on my 15 hp rude, this is normal.

drain some oil from your lower unit, if its milky bad L/U seal if its tea colored or black its normal. most often oil coming from the exhaust leg draining from lower area will be black as it has been mixed with water and burnt oil/gas. milky looking oil is a emulsified water & oil mixture which looks more like a nice mocca latte.

if termostat is removed so motor will not heat up to right temp to burn much oil from fuel mix

Propeller Shaft seal is worn, and leaking. You most probably have water in your lower unit. Stand motor up for about a day, remove bottom drain plug only on lower unit and check for water, leave motor standing vertical till you check it so that water will be the first thing to come out once you remove drain plug.

I've been running my 87 15hp in the garage this spring and the next morning there will be a little black puddle, never the milkshake stuff. Like others have said, better check your lower unit.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like it could still be one or the other. I'm on the road right now, getting back Wed morning. The motor is standing right now, so I'll open up the lower drain when I get home to see what I get and report back.

Checked the lower drain and nice clean blue oil seeped out, no sign of water. Thanks guys. I'll now make it a habbit to check every so often to make sure that is still the case.

That is normal for these 2 cycles especially if you use it for a lot of trolling where the motor does not get hot enough to burn the excess oil in the mix.
