I have a 1980 model 9.9 and am haveing trouble geting the right shifter adj. ,I can get at the shifter linkage, Does the bottom end have to be right off?
Hey mtn...

Are you trying to get the shift lever to point at neutral when in neutral and so on? On the starboard side of the engine is the shift lever. This prvents the engine from starting at wot. There is an adjustable link from the lever to the shaft the shift handle connects to. Some adjustment can be made here.

Have you had the lower unit off lately?
I have to agree with Outboard Jim. If you had the lower un it off & got the lower shift rod out of adjustment, this may also effect the levers position.

But, just why are you needing to make an shifter adjustment?

One other thing is that IF you somehow got the twist grip gears out of sync, that may also effect the timing plate linkage, which in turn may position the timing plate to interfere with the lock out for the shifter?? Just a thought.

Here is a good link that may help for that model

http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
