I have the opportunity to pick up a Johnson 9.9 with electric start and all the remote cables for $350.00. The owner claims its got low hours and runs good. I'll check it out completley when I get there. Question is what is the value of the electric start systems and controls? Is it easily converted back to pull start and tiller? Curious if I could but the motor and get most of my money back on the controls.

Also can anyone identify the ballpark age based on the picture?

Ball park would be late eighties early nineties.Your conversion would probably a wash.Trading the remote control for a tiller arm.The starter might get you 30 dollars on Ebay.

I seen the conversion kits on E-bay for around $600, but I didn't know what I would have to exchange. Can they still be pull started, or do they still have a pull handle? Does this seem like a good price for the motor?

Either the guy does not know what he is selling,or there is a very good reason why it is so cheap (salt water?).
To me it seems that you either won the lottery or it is too good to be true.
Unless the rope start has been removed,it should be part and parcel of the electric start setup

I guess it could be salt water but I live along way away from any salt. Any how I'm going to go look at it in the morning. I don't really need another motor....but like I told my wife this could be as good as finding money on the ground. And it should pay for itself in 1-2K fish. I find that alot of people around here use them for kickers on their river sleds. Overall they rarely get used unless the big motor dies because they won't power the boat up river. They may start them on occasion to right the boat, or use them to get to shore if the main one dies. I hope this is the case.

I would be very leary of that motor. A Johnson in my neck of the woods with electric start and cables will run over a grand used. Just priced one the other day, manual start and no remote cables and it's a 1982, for $800. $350 means there is something not right with the motor.

I went and checked the motor, good compression and it pumped water when we tried to start it. Also came with all controls and wiring except for the steering cable. Kind of lloks like the steering bracket may be homemade but all the other controls are Evinrude simplex. Anyhow it had no spark. I took the plung and bought it anyway as it looked like brand new. The guy that sold it to me is a local deisel mechanic that took it as a payment with the intention of using it as a kicker. When he decide not to use it he put it up for sale. He claimed that it ran when he got it but has been sitting. Who knows, I tend to beleive him as he called me this evening as asked if I started it. I told him the story and he offered my money back if I wasn't happy.

Well it cost me another $100 for the power pack but the motor runs great. I was truly amazed as I have never run a 9.9 before. After years of my Scotts I was impressed with my 9.5 johnny, which is a great motor, but the 9.9 is so smooth it's amazing. Now I gotta sell these controls to recoop some of my money.

Sounds like a good deal for that motor and you saved quite a bit of money fixing it yourself. The 9.9s 'running' go for a lot more than that in my neck of the woods and I promise you that no one around here is going to offer your money back if they don't.

When you get around to it box up that 9.5 and send it my way. :D I need another to backup the two that I already have.

another way you got lucky--usually a motor stored on its "back" like the pic is history. usually i wouldn't spend any time on it.

I was wondering the same thing. I know they don't drain all the water, but if drained I can't imagine what could be wrong with it. A 4-stroke I understand but a 2-stroke ?????
